Bring Your Hardwood Floors Back to Life
Before you replace your floors, refinish them. Most hardwood floors — even ones that look worn, scratched, or dull — can be fully restored through professional sanding and refinishing. It's faster, cheaper, and more sustainable than replacement.
Golden Bay Floors has refinished thousands of floors across San Francisco and the Bay Area. Victorian Douglas fir in the Sunset. Wide-plank oak in Pacific Heights. Mid-century maple in Marin. We know how to bring out the best in any floor.
Signs Your Floors Need Refinishing
Surface scratches that are visible across the room
Dull, gray, or faded finish that no longer reflects light
Stains that won't clean up with normal mopping
Worn patches in high-traffic areas (hallways, entryways)
Discoloration from water damage or pet accidents
The floor looks "tired" even after cleaning
Our Refinishing Process
Sanding
We use professional drum sanders and edgers to remove the existing finish and the top layer of wood. This eliminates scratches, stains, and wear marks down to bare, fresh wood.
Stain (Optional)
Want a new look? This is your chance. Choose from our library of stain colors — from light natural to deep ebony — to transform the feel of your space.
Finish Application
We apply your chosen finish in multiple coats, with light sanding between each coat for maximum adhesion and a glass-smooth result. Options include oil-based polyurethane (most durable), water-based polyurethane (low odor, faster dry), and hardwax oil (natural look).
Final Coat & Cure
After the final coat, we let the floor cure fully before furniture goes back. We'll walk you through care instructions so your refinished floors stay beautiful for years.
How Long Does Refinishing Take?
Most rooms take 2–4 days from start to finish. We'll give you a precise timeline with your estimate. Light foot traffic is possible after 24 hours; full cure takes 7–10 days.
Refinishing vs. Replacement — What Makes Sense?
Refinishing costs a fraction of replacement and, in most cases, produces an equally beautiful result. We'll give you an honest assessment of your floors during our estimate visit. If your floors have been refinished many times and there isn't enough wood left to sand again, we'll tell you.
