The Right Floor Starts with the Right Decision
Choosing a hardwood floor is more complex than it looks. The species affects durability and grain character. The width changes how a room feels. The stain color can make a space feel warm and cozy or cool and modern. The finish determines sheen, maintenance, and longevity.
Get one of those decisions wrong, and you'll live with it for 20 years.
At Golden Bay Floors, we've helped thousands of Bay Area homeowners make these decisions confidently. Our design consultation service — offered in our Clement Street showroom and in your home — takes the guesswork out of one of the most significant upgrades you can make to a property.
What's Included in a Design Consultation
In-Showroom Consultation
Visit our showroom at 2100 Clement St in San Francisco's Inner Richmond. Browse real samples — not small chips — of hardwood, engineered wood, and SPC flooring in natural light. Our flooring experts will walk you through:
Species comparison — oak vs. walnut vs. maple vs. hickory and more
Width options — from classic 2.25" strips to contemporary 7" wide planks
Stain color selection — from light naturals to rich dark tones
Finish type — matte, satin, semi-gloss; oil-based vs. water-based vs. hardwax
Texture options — smooth, wire-brushed, hand-scraped, distressed
Budget planning — best options at every price point
In-Home Consultation
For larger projects or homeowners who want to see samples in their actual space, we offer in-home consultations. We bring a curated selection of samples to your home, assess your existing floors, lighting, and architecture, and make specific recommendations based on what we see.
In-home consultations are available for projects throughout San Francisco, Marin County, the East Bay, and the Peninsula.
Digital Color Matching
Already have a design vision — a paint color, a cabinet sample, a furniture piece you love? Bring it in (or send us a photo) and we'll help you find the floor stain and finish that ties your space together perfectly.
We Specialize in Bay Area Homes
Flooring design isn't one-size-fits-all — and Bay Area homes present unique considerations that out-of-state showrooms or big-box stores simply don't understand.
Victorian & Edwardian Homes
San Francisco's iconic pre-war homes deserve period-appropriate flooring. We help homeowners choose between restoring original Douglas fir, installing complementary oak, or adding engineered hardwood that honors the home's character without sacrificing modern performance.
Mid-Century Modern
Clean lines, warm tones, and wide planks — mid-century homes call for a specific aesthetic. We stock species and finishes that pair beautifully with MCM architecture, from walnut in warm brown tones to white oak in a soft natural finish.
Contemporary & New Construction
Minimalist interiors benefit from matte finishes, wide-plank formats, and lighter, more neutral tones. We'll help you navigate the current design trends and find a floor that feels current without being a slave to the moment.
Coastal & Humid Environments
The Bay Area's fog, marine layer, and temperature swings affect how wood performs. We factor your home's specific climate zone — Inner Sunset vs. East Bay hills vs. Marin hillside — into every material recommendation to ensure your floors stay stable and beautiful for decades.

Common Design Questions
What's the most popular hardwood choice in San Francisco right now?
White oak is by far our most requested species. It's versatile, durable, and pairs beautifully with both modern and traditional interiors. Wire-brushed textures and matte finishes are particularly popular in the Bay Area right now.
Should I match my floor to my cabinets?
Not necessarily — contrast often looks better than matching. A general rule: if your cabinets are dark, go lighter on the floor, and vice versa. We'll show you combinations that work in our showroom.
How do I choose between light and dark floors?
Light floors make small rooms feel larger and show less dust. Dark floors are dramatic and luxurious but show every pet hair. We'll discuss your lifestyle, your lighting, and your aesthetic goals before making a recommendation.
Can I change my stain color when refinishing?
Yes — refinishing is the perfect opportunity to change your floor color. We can go lighter or darker than your existing stain, or try something completely different. We'll test stain samples on your floor before committing.
How long does a consultation take?
Showroom consultations typically take 30–60 minutes. In-home consultations are 45–90 minutes depending on the scope of the project.
